1 Utama’s colourful experience for shoppers this Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2009

For this Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2009 the entire concourse of 1 Utama shopping complex was decorated to look like a fishing village complete with traditional Malay attap roof house, fishermen boats and resting area amidst coconut trees and lush greenery.

On display were handicraft items and Raya cookies for sale to shoppers who enjoyed the rich cultural performances daily during the festive period.

It was a rich and colourful village experience for all.

A traditional dance performance executed with extreme grace and poise on Thursday September 17, 2009 at the concourse of The Weld Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The performance by dancers from Wariseni Budaya is one of abundance of songs, dance and music lined up to keep shoppers entertained in conjunction with the Hari Raya 2009 celebration.

Besides the traditional dances, musicians also displayed their skills at playing traditional instrumental music such as bulola, angklong, gamelan and caklempong.

McCurry Boleh!

An Indian eatery in Kuala Lumpur city called McCurry Restaurant has gained international fame after McDonald’s (which claimed the name of the restaurant breached it’s trademark) sued McCurry and lost the eight-year legal battle after Malaysia’s highest court, the Federal Court, ruled on 8th September 2009, in favour of McCurry, that McDonald's cannot claim an exclusive right to the 'Mc' prefix in the country.

Internet news from Al Jazeera, BBC to CNN and newspapers across the globe carried with headlines “McCurry wins row with McDonald's” and “Malaysia’s McCurry beat McDonald's in trademark fight" and I knew I just had to try it and decided to check out the place.

The restaurant is situated at the first mile Jalan Ipoh near Jalan Raja Laut, Chow Kit area in Kuala Lumpur. Its ideal location in the business district of Jalan Ipoh makes the place popular with everyone looking for affordable meal from office workers, tourists staying at nearby hotels and to families on weekends.

The restaurant serves a variety of spicy Malaysian Indian curries, including chicken curry, mutton curry, fish head curry, nasi briyani and favourite cuisine like roti canai, thosai, chapatti, murtabak and tandoori naan.

Overall the food is of acceptable quality but can definitely be improved. The price is reasonable without burning a hole in your pocket. The teh tarik drink is kinda cheap here at RM1 a glass. The place is crowded during lunch hour and also on weekends and public holidays.

Business is brisk here, but McCurry Restaurant owner A.M.S.P. Suppiah and his staff are always very friendly.

For Suppiah, 55, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate from New Zealand, his phone had not stopped ringing since winning the case. He has become an instant celebrity of sort and had been receiving lots of local and international calls daily from strangers, people he does not know, who called to congratulate and wish him well. Many others walked into his restaurant to congratulate him personally and to take photos with him. On top of that, he received many inquiries from enterprising people from as far as China about franchising his business restaurant and he has appointed a franchising consultant for advice.

“A 67 years old man called from Ireland after seeing the news from BBC and he said this to me: I thank you so much for pointing out to the world that the prefix “Mc” belongs to the Irish and Scottish people and not exclusive to any single corporation”, said Suppiah who has a friend by the name of Bruce McCurry.

“I also received a call from a Dato’ Yunus Rais from London who said he was a Malaysian and had been staying in London for 30 years. He saw the news on BBC and CNN and had this to say to me: This is the best news I heard from Malaysia this year. You have made Malaysians proud," said Suppiah.

Yes I am proud that a small Indian restaurant can fight with a fast-food giant and win the battle. McCurry Boleh! Malaysia Boleh!

Here’s the awesome McCurry – short for Malaysian chicken curry that goes great with plain boiled rice.

McCurry restaurant serves a variety of chicken curry. They also serve vegetarian curry and dishes catering to vegetarians. The dishes are replenished every six hours to ensure freshness. The restaurant operates 24 hours round the clock and employs 18 staff working in two shifts.

Customers can choose from a variery of Indian curry food, including chicken curry and mutton curry.

MATTA Fair II September 4 - 6, 2009 KL: International performances a big hit

Fabulous international performances featuring a kaleidoscope of captivating cultural performers, colourful costumes and mesmerizing modern dances from Asian countries were a big hit with the crowds of visitors to Malaysia Association Travel and Tour Agents (MATTA) Fair II September 2009.

The 3-day MATTA Fair II 2009 opened at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur, September 4 - 6, 2009 with more than 860 booths occupying a total space of over 20,000 sq. metres and offering a wide variety of domestic and international discount travel packages, value-for-money air tickets and other travel related products.

The crowd is still there albeit a bit smaller as compared to the last MATTA fair held in March 2009. According to a director and general manager of a leading travel agency, his company had recorded a 20% drop in sales as consumers and business remain cautious by cutting back their travel plans in the face of the challenging economic conditions and the recent H1N1 flu pandemic.

According to the latest figure released by the Malaysia Health Ministry as at 6th September 2009, the dealth toll due to the influenza A(H1N1) are recorded at 73 cases with anoher 332 cases confimed with H1N1 positive now being treated at hospitals throughout the country, including 52 who are in intensive care units (ICU).

88 Taiwan typhoon morakot memorial @ Chempaka Buddhist Lodge, PJ

More than 100 people including special guest Deputy Minister For Women, Family and Community Development and Wanita MCA chief YB Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun attended the “88 Taiwan Typhoon Memorial” ceremony on 31st August 2009 at Chempaka Buddhist Lodge in Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya.

Jointly organized by Chempaka Buddhist Lodge (CBL) Petaling Jaya together with Association of Taiwan Alumni Malaysia, PJU MCA Wanita and PJU Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM) the memorial is to let the public mourn the victims, pray for the disaster survivors, share merits with the departed victims and the community.

The memorial service is opened to the public irrespective of religion and race for prayers from 26 August to 6 September 2009.

A donation box is placed there for the public to donate and all donations collected will be handed to Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre for transmission to the disaster victims.

Let us hope that the people of Taiwan will survive and recover from the damage with faith and love.

Typhoon Morakot hit hard in southern and eastern parts of Taiwan and caused severe damage and deaths on August 8, 2009. It is the worst storm to hit southern Taiwan in over 50 years. Floods and mudslides unleashed by Typhoon Morakot had killed more than 500 people on the island and destroyed the homes of 7,000 people and caused agricultural and property damage in excess of 50 billion New Taiwan dollars (US$1.5 billion).

Dazzling show by Tianjin Cathay Future Art and Culture Troupe from China at charity performance in aid of SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Damansara

A splendid performance by talented school children of the well-known Tianjin Cathay Future Art and Culture Troupe of China dazzled the audience with song, music and dance at the charity performance in aid of SRJK (C) Chung Hwa, Damansara development and scholarship fund held on Sunday 16th August 2009 at Lim Bee Auditorium of SRJK (C) Chee Wen in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The troupe includes dancers, singers and kung ku exponent whose age ranged from seven to eleven.

The fund raising was a great success as a total of RM100,000 was raised through donations by the generous public and business community.

Thai cultural shows, traditional hand crafted Thai umbrellas as well as free Thai massages fascinated shoppers at the 3-day Amazing Thailand Festival 2009 held from 14 - 16 August 2009 at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre (MVEC) in Kuala Lumpur.

There were more than thirty participating booths selling Made in Thailand products which were marketed by local distributors.

The event is organized by the Government of Thailand to promote Thai products and services in conjunction with the country’s ongoing Amazing Thailand Grand Sale which runs from June 1 until August 31, 2009.

The 2-day Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival (KLPF) 2009 held from 15th – 16th August 2009 at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre (MVEC) at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur attracted a capacity crowd of professional and amateur photographers and photography enthusiasts who were looking for photography gear and accessories bargains.

The event showcased the latest and best digital compact and DSLR cameras, lenses, flash units, tripods, dry cabinets and other photography related equipment and gadgets. In addition there were also photography exhibition, model shooting contest, product demonstrations and seminar, tips and talks.

The highlights of the day were :

Model Shoot Out Contest where pretty models strutted down the runway and hordes of photographers with their huge lenses, flash guns, and short ladders snapping away picture perfect photos. The winner’s photos will be published in photography magazines.

Grand Gala Dinner at Cheng Long Kong Temple Birthday Anniversary Celebration in PJ Old Town

The famous Cheng Long Kong Temple (also known as Jin Long Gong) located at No.35 Jalan 1/2 in Old Town Petaling Jaya held a 5-day temple anniversary celebration beginning from 10th – 14th August, 2009.

Thousands of worshippers thronged the temple to offer prayers to the resident deity Loke Yan Sin Sze where they seek good fortune, good health and longevity.

A grand 8-course Chinese dishes for more than 2,000 guests and a great entertainment show were held at the large open space in front of the temple on 12th August, 2009

Guests of honour Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Selatan YB Hee Loy Sian and Bukit Gasing state assemblyman YB Edward Lee joined over 2,000 dining guests for the grand gala dinner held in celebration of the the birthday anniversary of the Cheng Long Kong Temple.

Both YBs made a donation of RM2,500.00 for the developmet of the temple.

Kuan Yin (Guanyin) Goddess of Mercy Birthday Celebration (19th day of 9th Month) @ Chempaka Buddhist Lodge, PJ

Devotees from all over Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur converged at the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge (CBL) at No.60 Jalan SS23/25, Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya to celebrate the Goddess of Mercy’s (also known as Kuan Yin or Guanyin) birthday on the 19th day of ninth Chinese calendar month which falls l on Sunday 9th August 2009.

The Goddess of Mercy's birthday is celebrated thrice annually - on the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth Chinese calendar month.

Prayers were held at the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge (and in all Kuan Yin temples) which was filled to capacity with devotees chanting and offering lighted lotus candles, lamps, joss sticks, flowers and seeking blessings from Kuan Yin for good health, longevity, away from suffering and everything that devotees can thought of in their prayers.

The majestic statue of Kuan Yin standing on a lotus flower and in a white flowing robe will leave you breathless. On her left hand is a small vase pouring a stream of healing water and her right hand holds a willow branch. Kuan Yin is the Goddess of Mercy that represents compassion, love and kindness.

It is believed that the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin looks almost life-like when you stared at the statue long enough.

Malaysian Bloggers Evening 2009: Super Party Time for Bloggers

It was an unforgettable night of great music and swinging goodtime for more than 200 bloggers as they mingled and danced the night away at the electronic dance floor with the popular DJ spinning foot-thumping music.

The party night was the Malaysian Bloggers Evening hosted by A dvertlets on Thursday 6th August 2009 and held at the Envie Club Lounge in Changkat Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. The interior is tastefully decorated and feels warm and cosy.

The good people at Envie Club Lounge were kind enough to provide the bloggers with free flow of beer, cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and finger food.

It was so great and such fun for the bunch of bloggers to meet up in person since they usually 'see' each other online and interact via blog commenting. There were games for those participating and prizes given away to lucky ones.

Everyone had fun. Hopefully there will be more such gatherings to come.

Welcome to Pikom PC Fair 2009 second edition (II) held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Kuala Lumpur from July 31 - August 2, 2009.

PC fairs are cool for two reasons. One is that you get great discounts on cool gadgets and upgrades for your computer. But the real reason that we get excited is the PC booth girls or booth babes as they are called. These girls have always been the highlights of such fair.

Coverage of the PC fair would not be complete without photos of the lovely ladies accompanying the information and technology products on display at the booths of exhibitors and retailers.

Full house: All the five exhibition halls, three conference halls, a banquet and ballroom were fully taken up by about 200 exhibitors and really crowded with many having lot of difficulty to move around. The people just pushed and squeezed their way through the big crowd. It was packed as hell and its no exaggeration to say that one could hardly breathe in the convention center.

A fashion show presented by the young talented designers of International Fashion Training Center (IFTC) held on Friday 24th July 2009 at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur.

The fashion presentation is based on Trend-Focus 2009 and showcased IFTC’s young fashion talents' fashion collections of Asian contemporary, designer read-to-wear, high fashion Kebaya, Hari Raya fashion, French couture, evening and bridal wear.

The IFTC young talent designs garnered enthusiastic approval from the audience for their stunning pieces of bright, vibrant colours, modern and flowing designs that draped the models’ bodies perfectly.

IFTC which was founded by Annie Wong in 1973 is a pioneer and leader majoring in the industry of fashion education and reputed to have produced some of the country's most finest quality fashion talents, icons and entreprenuers of word class standards.

IFTC is labelled and awarded by Brand Laureate SME Chapter Awards for two consecutive years in a row:

33rd Bon Odori 2009: Joyful celebration by bumper crowd at Panasonic stadium in Shah Alam near Kuala Lumpur

More than 30,000 visitors jam-packed the stadium at the Panasonic Sports Complex (formerly Matsushita Centre) in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur on Saturday 18th July, 2009 to celebrate the 33rd Bon Odori Festival.

Everyone present, including the Mentri Besar (Chief Minister) of Selangor Tan Sri Dato’ Abdul Khalid Bin Ibrahim and the Japanese ambassador to Malaysia Masahiko Horie and his wife Mrs. Yoko Horie had a great time partying all evening to the Japanese folk songs and Bon dance.

The Bon Odori Festival is a major event in Japan which is held annually to honour the deceased spirits of one's ancestors. In Malaysia, the celebration is less associated with Buddhism and held mainly to expose Malaysians to experience Japanese culture - the variety of Japanese food and drinks, art and dance.

It was truly a colourful and joyful celebration bringing together the Japanese expatriate community, students of Japanese language, members of Japanese thematic clubs, societies, Malaysians of different races and just about anyone interested to learn about Japanese culture participated in this great event strengthening the existing bonding of Japan and Malaysia.

The Bon Odori Festival is the place where you see a load of Yukata being worn. The name yukata comes from the word "yu" (bath) and "katabira" (under clothing ). Long time ago, it was draped loosely after taking a bath. Today, in Japan, the traditional japanese yukata are widely used for everything from dances, casual wear in the summer, to simple night attire.

Sokker Safari: 2010 FIFA World Cup Fever at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur

Astro introduced Stadium Astro Sokker Safari for the public to get into the 2010 FIFA World Cup fever at Bukit Jalil (car park next to Bukit Jalil National Stadium) on Saturday 18th July, 2009.

South Africa is hosting the next World Cup in 2010.

The mobile mini stadium is actually made up of a combination of four units of 4×40 foot long trailer with a futsal field and a retractable sitting terrace. This is really cool and fun for the whole family. Being introduced for the firs time in Malaysia, we can expect to see more of this mobile stadium moving around the country for sports and game activites.

Besides the celebrity futsal matches, there were other exciting activities for everyone to join in the excitement and fun including African dance performances, singing by local artistes and a friendly football match between Manchester United (MU), who was in Malaysia as part of its Asia Tour 2009, and Malaysia XI which was played at the Bukit Jalil Stadium.

The FIFA World Cup football fever has started!

The exterior of Stadium Astro Sokker Safari is embellished with African motifs.

It is actually a combination of a 4×40 foot truck that transforms into Stadium Astro, an area that features a futsal field and a retractable sitting terrace.

The 2-day inaugural DaiCon 2009 convention held from 11 – 12 July 2009 at The Grand Hall of Multimedia University (MMU) in Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, Malaysia was a great success with big crowd attendance, thanks to the support of fans, industry players and sponsors.

Thousands of fans of manga, anime, novels and video games swarmed the exhibition booths selling anime merchandise, figurines, artworks, artbooks, badges and other collectible stuffs.

It was also a great time for cosplayers in their colorful and eyes-striking costumes and full glory competing in the cosplay competition which was a great fun to watch where they demonstrated their skills in creating costumes, putting on skits and technical skills.

Daicon is organized by EMiNA (actually ANIME spelled backwards), the acronym for the Society of Modern Visual Culture of Multimedia University (MMU), and should be given a pat on the back for successfully organizing the expo to promote the best of modern Japanese anime, comic and games (ACG) interests that had received rave attention. It was definitely hard work, dedication and sheer determination to succeed by the organizing committee that made Daicon possible for everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves.

It was a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds as a multi-cultural drums performance by the Malaysian Drum Symphony, heartbeat percussion bands, fashion show, busking acts by masquerade artistes and fire-eaters enthralled invited guests, tourists, visitors and shoppers during the official launch of Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival 2009 at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 5th July 2009 by the wife of Prime Minister of Malaysia, YABhg Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The Malaysia Mega Sales Carnival from July 4 to August 31, 2009 is supported by the Tou rism Ministry in promoting Malaysia as a world class shopping destination.

These photos are taken from an Islamic fashion show which took place during the official launch of Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 5th July, 2009 by the wife of Prime Minister of Malaysia, YABhg Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The Islamic fashion show featured top local and international designers who focused on Islamic fashion with Malaysian, Arabic and Middle Eastern designs.

Well one thing I found out is that Islamic dress which is known for its modesty can be adapted in trendy fashion to suit the modern everyday life and yet still adhering to Islamic ideals.

Malaysian Domestic Tourism Fair A Success

Thousands of visitors and tourists thronged Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur to get great bargains and fantastic domestic travel and tour options at the inaugural 3-day Malaysian Domestic Tourism Fair from July 3 - 5, 2009.

Special highlights include tourism workshops, presentations, Latin dance performances and cultural shows.

The crowd on the first day was small and booth exhibitors began to worry but were relieved as the number of visitors and sales soon picked up towards the later part of the second day and on the last day.

This is the first edition of a domestic travel and tour fair held and a successful one with visitors crowding the booths at the fair for the best travel bargains and discounts on tour packages, air tickets and other travel-related products.

Free zorbing ball ride for visitors at the fair. The zorb has one or two openings, depending on models, through which the rider enters and exits.

The zorb ball originated in New Zealand in the 1990s and riders in a zorb are called "zorbonauts".

Once inside, the rider rolls the ball forward.

Sometimes assitants are needed to push the ball rolling.

The fair attracted many young and energetic thrill seekers to come and experience the Zorbing Ball Rides. It was an unforgettable experience indeed for them.
