SS2 Cares Chinese New Year 2009 street carnival

Damansara Utama State Assemblyman Dr. Cheah Wing Yin officiated the SS2 Cares Chinese New Year Street Carnival 2009 in Jalan SS2/62, Petaling Jaya on Saturday, January 10, 2009.

He represented Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Bandar Dato’ Hj Mohamad Roslan bin Sakimans who did not turn up due to some pressing matters.

Also present to mark the carnival's launch were Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara (PJU) Tony Pua, Section 21 SEA Park Residents Association (RA) president Gan Keng, Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) Local Agenda 21 officer Lee Lih Shyan, MBPJ officials and committee members of organisations involved in putting up this carnival in line with the principle of Local Agenda 21 PJ.

These organizations include SS2 Market Traders Association, SS2 Zone Service Centre, Rukun Tetangga SS2B, Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled and many others who gave support in sponsorng the event.

The carnival is organised by the SS2 Cares, a charity organisation, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration. The SS2 Cares objectives are to forge a partnership between different parties such as the business community and residents, and to show the caring side of the SS2 community towards their surroundings and neighbourhood.

The stalls at the carnival sells goods such as Chinese New Year decorative items, cookies, sun-dried foodstuff, apparels and many other stuff for the festive season.

Besides, there are also various activities such as caligraphy contest, free acunpunture, Tetrapak beverage cartons recycling campaign, garbage enzyme demonstration and others which had been lined up throughout the carnival that would take place until January 23, 2009.

Receiving mandarin oranges from the lion. This is a symbolic act of blessing by the lion.


Kids can't resist to touch the eyelids, mouth and ears of the lion's head.


The lion dance troupe, comprising young performsers, from Persatuan Tarian Singa & Naga Rumah Berhala Yuen Leong Sing Fatt Kampung Cempaka, Petaling Jaya.

Walk through the carnival and you will find many stalls selling Chinese new year decorative items.


This stall owner said that many people were looking for decorative items that coincide with the Year of the Ox.


Some shoppers prefer decorative stuff with traditional designs.


Collectible Fuk Lok Sau figurines gods of health, wealth and prosperity respectively. Very popular in Chinese homes for their strong symbols of all the good things in life. No need to worship these beings.


Oxen figurines and novelties for home decorations to bring lots of prosperity for Year of the Ox.


Red ribbons and curtains are favoured during Chinese New Year.


Pomelos are a must for Chinese New Year. If possible, buy pomelos that have a leaf or a branch still attached. This is a sign of good fortune.


Many varieties of Chinese New Year cookies to choose from.


Flowers are an all time favorite decorative items for Chinese New Year.


Curly fortune bamboo shoots in various lengths and shapes for sale at a stall.


The bamboo is very popular as a symbol of life, longevity and strength.


Spoilt for choice: This woman can't decide which items to buy.


A big crowd attracted to the extremely reasonable prices of clothes at one of the stalls.


A stall selling mushrooms, oyster and other sun-dried ingredients used specifically in cooking Chinese New Year specialties.
