Wesak Day 2009 float procession at Chempaka Buddhist Lodge

A float procession organised by Chempaka Buddhist Lodge in Petaling Jaya was held in the evening on Sunday, 10th May 2009 as part of the Wesak Day celebration.

Thousands of chanting devotees followed behind colourful and brightly-lit floats bearing the statue of Buddha in a 8 km procession which started at the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge grounds in SS23 Taman SEA and passed through SS24 Taman Megah, Section 21 SEA Park, SS2, Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) and then back to Chempaka Buddhist Lodge.

At Section 21 SEA Park and SS2, hundreds of people lined both side of the streets to watch the procession when the floats passed through Jalan 21/27 (in front of SMK Taman SEA), Jalan 21/34 and Jalan SS2/24.

I had the opportunity to take photographs of the floats which passed through the streets in SEA Park.

The procession was led by two dragons from the Kampung Chempaka Liang Luang Lion Troops Team. The dragon dance captivates those lining the streets to watch the procession.

It is said that when Buddha sat in meditation under the Bodhi tree of Enlightenment, the mighty king cobra rose up from his place beneath the earth and enveloped the Buddha in seven coils for seven days to protect the Buddha from a storm arose so his meditation would not be broken.

The Ti-Ratana Welfare Society contributed four floats in the procession.
