Mini KL Bird Park at Ikano Power Centre, Petaling Jaya

A mini KL Bird Park was literally transported to Ikano Power Centre shopping mall at Mutiara Damansara in Petaling Jaya for shoppers to see and learn about the various species of parrots and other feathered friends.

Held during the school holidays from 30th May – 14th June, 2009, the campaign which is a joint collaboration between Ikano Power Centre and KL Birds Park attracted big crowd of shoppers, visitors and whole family members to the two free-walk aviaries set up at the main concourse on the ground floor of the mall.

World of Parrots:

What a cute Red Lory Parrot (Eos bornea). It looks so cute and fluffy. Its a beautiful and playful bird. It is endemic to Indonesia and the south-eastern part of the Maluku Islands.

The African Grey Parrots (Psittacus erithacus) are considered the most talented talking parrot. Experts regard it as one of the most intelligent birds. Their ability to mimic speech have made them popular pets.

The Pesquet's Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus) which hail from Papua New Guinea is the only parrot with a bare (featherless) face. It is seldom seen in captivity and its feathers are highly prized.

The Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus). The males are bright green, with bright candy corn-colored beaks, and the females red headed and blue-breasted, with black beaks.

The Lesser Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea parvula), a large white parrot is found in Sulawesi (Celebes), Sunda Islands and other adjoining islands. Not everybody can tolerate the natural loud call of a cockatoo.

This Lesser Sulphur-crested Cockatoo or also known as Yellow-crested Cockatoo gets a lot of attention from a visitor.

The very active and playful African Peachfaced Love Birds (Agapornis roseicollis) originate in South-western Africa and are the most common Love Bird species in captivity. A great many color mutations have been established with well over 100,000 possible color combinations. They are the largest species of Love Bird.

Other Feathered Friends:

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is found almost anywhere in the world outside polar and desert regions. It does not hoot, instead it produces the characteristic shree scream.

A KL Bird Park staff holding a Malay Eagle Owl (Bubo sumatranus) also known as Barred Eagle Owl and Oriental Eagle Owl sure looks a lot like an eagle and ...like a mogwai (gremlins) too! It sure is scary and cute at the same time but it is a friendly beautiful owl. The Malay Eagle Owl feeds on large insects, small mammals, snakes and small birds. It is found in Myanmar, southern Thailand, Malayisa and Indonesia. Perching on his shoulder is a Red Lory Parrot.

Children have fun with the friendly birds perching on their heads.
