Everything was going well at the Merdeka cum Mooncake Celebration event held last Saturday night September 6, 2008 at a car park area until heavy rain disrupted the main proceeding which was the lantern procession to be led by a police outrider and two lions scheduled to start at 8.00 pm.
It had to be called off (including the karaoke session) due to continuous rain which stopped at 11.00 pm. The lion dance troupe are from Universiti Malaya's Persatuan Tionghua.
The rain however did not dampen the spirits of nearly 300 residents who had earlier turned up before water fell from the sky. A good turnout estimated at 1,000 people was expected.
The event was organized by SEA Park Residents Association under MBPJ LA21 in collaboration with the State Assemblyman for Kampung Tunku YB Lau Weng San.
Refusing to allow the rain to spoil their appetites, the children and their parents braved the event to carry the lanterns and sample the tastes of mooncakes and other foodstuff under the tents. Without any doubt the children had a great time at the event.
With the arrival of the State Assemblyman for Kampung Tunku YB Lau Weng San, the national anthem Negaraku was played to the attention of all in attendance.
In his speech, YB Lau was so apologetic about coming late to officiate the event. He said that he came straight here after attending another event and was very pleased with the big turnout from residents despite the heavy rain. He hoped that the event will promote unity and instill merdeka and cultural spirit within all Malaysians.
Later he gave away free goody bags to all those present. The MP for PJ Utara YB Tony Pua came soon after YB Lau Weng Sang left.
The event ended early at about 9.30 pm as many people had left and it was still raining.
