The International Contemporary Art Fair 2008 is held at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, November 26th – 30th 2008.

I was at the mall today Saturday, November 29, 2008 for another function when I walked into this art fair showcasing contemporary art works by local and international artists. The artworks such as paintings, photographs and sculptures are for public viewing and sale.

This is my first to an art show. No, I am not an art collector and not shopping to buy any artworks there but to appreciate the artworks which figured on variety of subjects such as colors, landscapes, still life, people, etc. One brush ink painting was priced at a whopping RM250,000.00!

Some of the booths are busy, most are quiet. Some of the visiting artists that I spoke to, one from France, another from Canada, said they were having a hard time as they had not experienced any sales since opening four days ago. Flight and accomodation were provided by the fair organizer Dunia Seni Lukis Sdn. Bhd. Their web site address is www.artmalaysia.com.my

I was told by a Canadian artist that the fair was last held in Malacca in 2006, and the next bi-annual fair will take place again in 2010 also in Kuala Lumpur. This was her first visit to Malaysia and Asia and she would consider coming back.

Note :Contemporary arts are made to satisfy all ethnic groups and cultures, while indigenous arts are made to serve particular traditional groups and cultures.

Indigenous arts are associated and inspired by "rituals" while contemporary arts are associated and inspired by uses, functions, foreign concepts and essentially by aesthetic values.
