Monsters and dinosaurs rule at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur


Giant-sized bugs and life-sized dinosaurs on display at the Backyard Monster and Dinosaurs exhibition at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur from April 18 until May 17, 2009. They are brought to life through the use of animatronics.



Chilean rose tarantula
Scientific name : Grammostola rosea
This Chilean rose tarantula stands ready to ambush its prey.


Unicorn beetle
Scientific name : Dynastes granti
The male uses that long horn to gifht other males for a female.


Carpenter ants
Scientific name : Camponotus vicinus
The Carpenter ants usually live in the ground where they burrow and fertilize the soil. Like termites, they chew through wood to make their nests.


Scorpion
Scientific name: Pandinus imperator
The scorpion usually hunt with claw and tail. It uses its pinching claws to grab insect prey, then stings it with the tail arched over its back.


Black widow spider
Scientific name : Latrodectus hesperus
This black widow spider is putting the wraps on her next meal - an insect struggling inside her silken bonds.


Praying mantis
Scientific name : Mantodea
This large green insect that holds its front legs in a way that makes it look as if it is praying when it is waiting to catch another insect.


Dragon fly
Scientific name : Anisoptera
This large insect with a long thin brightly-coloured body and two pairs of transparent wings perched on top of a high pole.


Stegosaurus
Means : Roof lizard or plated lizard
Length : 8 - 9 metres / 26 - 30 feet long
Height : 2.75 metres / 91 feet tall at the hips
Weight : 3,100 kg / 6,800 lbs
Lived : 156 - 140 million years ago
Fossils : First stegosaurus fossil was found in Colorado in USA in 1876.


Dimetrodon
Means : Two-measures tooth
Length : 3.5 metres / 11.5 feet long
Weight : 250 kg / 550 lbs
Lived : 280 - 245 million years ago
Fossils : Found in Texas and Oklahoma in the USA.

Pachycephalusaurus
Means : Thick-headed lizard
Length : 4.6 metres / 15 feet long
Weight : 430 kg / 950 lbs
Lived : 76 to 65 million years ago.
Fossils : Found in Alberta, canada, the western United States, the Isle of Wight (UK) and Madagascar.


Apatosaurus
Means : Deceptive lizard
Length : 21 - 27 metres / 70 - 90 feet long
Weight : 30,000 - 35,000 kg / 66,000 - 77,000 lbs
Lived : 157 - 146 million years ago
Fossils : Found in Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming in USA and North America.


The apatosaurus is a plant eater.

Means : Terrible claw
Length : 3 metres / 10 feet long
Height : 1.5 metres / 5 feet
Weight : 80 kg / 176 lbs
Lived : 110 - 100 million years ago
Fossils : Found in Montana, Utah and Wyoming in USA.


Triceratops
Means : Three-horned face
A herbivore - plant eater

Lived : 72 - 65 million years ago
Fossils : Found in western Canada, western USA and North America.


Basilosaurus
Means : King lizard
A carnivorous
Length : Female around 15 metres long, males around 18 metres long
Lived : 40 to 34 million years ago.
Fossils : Found in Louisiana, USA and in the Fayum deposits of Egypt.


Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex)
Means : Tyrant lizard king
Length : 12.4 metres /40 feet long
Height : 4.6 - 6 metres / 15 - 20 feet tall
Weight : 5,000 - 7,000 kg / 11,000 - 15,000 lbs
Fossils : Found in western North America.
