Mobile Sight First project gives free spectacles to needy

The needy students and adults were excited to receive their free spectacles, thanks to the Mobile Sight First project by Lions Club which was launched by CIMB Bank Area Retail Manager 9 (ARM9) Freddie Acho Bian on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at CIMB Bank SEA Park branch premises in Section 21, Jalan 21/11A, SEA Park, Petaling Jaya.

The Mobile Sight First project is a community service project by Lions Club in collaboration with CIMB’s Community Link which sponsored the spectacles.

The 150 beneficiaries of the sponsored spectacles were students from primary and secondary schools, university undergraduates and elderly residents from the SEA Park neighbourhoods.

The schools and university selected for the Mobile Sight First project were :-

1. SRJK (C ) Puay Chai, SS2 Petaling Jaya
2. SMK Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya
3. SMK Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya
4. SMK Sri Petaling, Petaling Jaya
5. University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur

Senior management team of CIMB, Lions members from Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Bukit Kiara, committee members of SEA Park Residents Association (RA), SEA Park Apartments Owners & Residents Association (SPORA) and SEA Park Apartments Management Corporation (MC) were present at the launch.

Also present to grace the event were Petaling Jaya Utara MP YB Tony Pua, Kampung Tunku state assemblyman YB Lau Weng San and former Kampung Tunku state assemblyman and president of Association of Backpackers Malaysia (ABM) Dato’ Dr Wong Sai Hou.

The president of Kiwanis Club Pandan Jaya branch Ho Wah Ying who is a long-time resident of SEA Park was also present to lend his support for the noble cause.

There were free eye screening, vision test and consultation by an optometrist for dry eyes, glaucoma and cataract. Besides these free eye checks, there was also free health screening by National Kidney Foundation (NKF). The program helps create awareness and educate the public on proper care for the eyes and the kidneys.

Light refreshments were served to guests.

CIMB Bank Regional Director 2 Nik Johaan Nik Hashim who was not present during the opening ceremony and came later, said in his prepared speech read out by CIMB Bank Area Retail Manager 9 (ARM9) Freddie Acho Bian, that the CIMB Foundation was established in 2007 to implement CIMB Group’s CSR and philanthropic activities in three main areas – community development, sports and education and that the group has pledged RM100 million over three years to fund CIMB Foundation. Since May 2007, the CIMB Group Community Link Programme has been involved in over 180 initiatives nationwide and contributed over RM6 million to various community based projects on education, socio- economic, environment protection and preservation.

“Community Link is the Foundation’s flagship initiative. Through our nationwide network of over 300 branches of CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic we are able to reach out to the communities in which we are located to identify and fund causes that will make a meaningful contribution to society.

“At CIMB Bank, we believe in giving back to the community beginning with the community of SEA Park and as our business grows so would our contribution to the community in which we operate,” he said.

President of Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Bukit Kiara Lion Belinda See in her welcome speech said that the Lions Club of KL Bukit Kiara was privileged and honoured to carry out the Mobile Sight First project and the free eye and health screening that was sponsored by CIMB Group through its Community Link arm had approved RM30,000 to help the needy students and residents around SEA Park area.

“The Lions has recently opened the Lions Eye Clinic located at Mahsa College at Jalan Universiti, Petaling Jaya. The clinic provides affordable eye care and free cataract operations to the eligible urban poor people. If you know of poor people from the Homes or public, please refer them to the clinic,” she said.
