More than 30 participants attended the launching and workshop of the Petaling Jaya Best Neighbourhood 2008-2009 Award held on Tuesday March 3, 2009 at the seminar room in Majlis Bandara Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) building.
The event was officially launched by Selangor Executive Councillor (Exco) in charge of local government, research and studies Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew.
In his speech, Ronnie Liu praised Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) for taking the lead in holding this annual competition which gives recognition to Residents Association (RA), Rukun Tetangga (RT) and Jawatankuasa Keselamatan dan Kemajuan Kampung (JKKK) or Village Development and Security Committees on their effort and success in implementing community, social, economic and environmental programmes in line with Local Agenda 21 on sustainable development.
The workshop was to allow participants comprising committee members of RA, RT and JKKK to discuss and familiarize with the competition guidelines and the programmes promoting sustainable development in their respective districts which can help them win the best neighbourhood award.
Global Environment Centre (GEC) coordinator for river care programme and also a member of the panel of judges Dr. K. Kalithasan presented a working paper entitled “What We Look and Look At?” to the participants.
Two last year prize winners of Petaling Jaya Best Neighbourhood Award 2007-2008 Ngiam Chong Choy of Rukun Tetangga SS2B (first prize winner) and Lee Meng Chong of Rukun Tetangga Kampung Cempaka (second prize winner) gave talks on their strategies, experiences and activities which helped them won the competition.
Later participants and judges were divided into three groups and sat on round tables for the session entitled “Teach in for the Competition” where they discussed on ideas, tips, problems and solutions to improving sustainable development for the community in their respective districts.
