The Chinese New Year open house at Dewan Serbaguna (Multi Purpose Hall) in SS3, Petaling Jaya on Friday, February 20, 2009 was well attended by more than a thousand people, including the less fortunate from Rumah Hope (a welfare home in Petaling Jaya) who were not forgotten in celebrating the festive occasion.
The event was organized by Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Petaling Jaya Utara division with the theme "An Evening With Petaling Jaya Utara Community".
Gracing the event were MCA PJ Utara division chairman Yeo Ing King, MCA PJ Utara division deputy chairman Dato' Lim Choon Kin, MCA PJ Utara division secretary Dato' Dr Wong Sau Hou, MCA PJ Utara Youth division chairman Tan Gim Tuan and special guest of honour, the Deputy Speaker of Dewan Negara (Senate) Y.B. Senator Dato' Ir. Wong Foon Meng who is also MCA Secretary-General.
I must say that the event was very successful with the large number of people present as it not only celebrates Chinese new year but also provides opportunities for everyone present to socialize and foster a closer rapport.
Guests were entertained to performances by acrobatic lion dance, dragon dance, Chinese cultural dance and Indian cultural dance.
The young Indian dancers performing the classical Indian dance are from Subranjali Dance Theatre based in Puchong, Selangor. According to the master Mr Nadarajah Muniandy (contact no. o12-6331911) the school currently have about 60 students ranging from aged 7 to 21 years old. As mastery requires many years of practice, dancers start learning the dance from as young as the age of seven or even five.

The three lions danced to the sound of drums, gongs and cymbals to bring happiness and good luck to everyone present.
