Chinese New Year traditions and merry-making

The Chinese New Year celebration lasts for 15 days.

Chinese New Year is a good opportunity and time for get-together and to catch up with friends and relatives who returned from near and far to celebrate with their families. There is also plenty of festive food which are not found on the table every day.

The various races in Malaysia will visit each other to celebrate the important festivals like Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali and Chinese New Year - a unique tradition of Malaysians.


Tossing the yee sang toss for good luck, prosperity, longevity, health and wealth. Yee Sang is a colourful salad of raw fish and crunchy vegetables. It is a prosperous traditional Chinese dish and Chinese New Year is incomplete without a yee sang toss.




Chinese New Year is that time of the year when tradition takes hold. Usually, family members, young and old, joined in friendly games of 3-Card and Blackjack playing for fun and hoping to win some money which symbolizes a good start to the lunar new year.
